INSTRUMENTAL

A typical Nigerian song that makes it up to a hit must have nothing but a very good instrumental.

This instrumental classified itself as good enough to fulfill its purpose, which is to make you dance.

SINGING SENSATION

The act has a melodious technique even from his verses; he gives this song an upbeat vocal presence and knows how to create a rhythm with his singing. He follows syllables and sings exactly what the fans want to hear.

He is an average singer, without the ability to sing professional music, or to show great vocal abilities, but he has the ability to sing what the people want, and this song is exactly what the people want to hear.

LYRICAL CONTENT

When it turns to lyrical content Wizkid is not a respecter of even the theory of music. He fails to write, and if he does he doesn’t write professionally. The only Act who has made a hit that the lyrical content was absolutely singing against its purpose in Africa. He is a hit maker, but a lyrically poor act.

Wizkid who has failed to write well, hasn’t failed to be the best freestyler Africa has, and he hasn’t failed to know how to arrange his words to make great rhythms that allows you to dance, turning it to an hit. He is the biggest hit maker in Africa, with over 40 official hits in a short period of time and still counting, his hit ratio is 3 hit in 4 songs, that’s like scoring three goals in every four shots taken.

Focusing on the lyrics of this song, three messages were implanted. One that praises himself as usual, the other that praises a girl, and the last that praises politicians.

Number 1 – credit is given to any act that can use syllables in his or her song, Wizkid is one of them. In this song we hear the drop of syllables in nearly every sentence.

“wonder - thunder.

bumper to bumper - bumper to fender.

defender. December,  back to sender”.

Number 2 – Repetitions of a particular word at the end of a lot of sentences makes a continuous syllable, despite with one word. It gives the song a touch of beautiful arrangement of words.

The word/slang “gan” was used in 6 sentences.

Number 3 – I have no idea the purpose of this song, maybe the Act just felt like doing a song, when it turns to having a great topic, I would say wizkid had seics in this song with an appropriate switch over. Topic switch from girl praises to politicians remarks, shows the act has lost touch in knowing how to switch or change topic in a song. Let’s check the lyrics above.

He speaks about a girl that he wants in his bed, talks about how much he loves her, then the next thing he does is praise politicians, that means there can be an assumption that Politicians are the girls he is talking about. Is that what he implies? That Fashola, the governor of Lagos state is not worthy of respect and can be placed alongside a girl praises? I doubt that.

He says he wants a person’s body, after such a statement he calls names of politicians. He is giving an indirect impression that politicians’ body is what he wants, because he failed to switch well.

I see what he wanted to do, he wanted to Praise Politicians in this song, but he switched wrongly. Let’s take a look at sample of how he could have done it in Verse 2.

He would have scrapped the inappropriate I want your body chorus that is right above the Politicians remark, and just praised the girl or himself and give a reason why he is praising the Politicians next. Something like this.

“Just tell me your feeling gan, anytime they hear my song they say am amazing gan and people know say Wizzy baby bad, they say am the baddest gan.

Some people think say they bad pass me but nobody bad at all.

And any party wey I go I march up the place, I turn on the feeling gan.

To the extent politicians be at my side, surely I feel them gan.

 Now the sentence I just added is an example of the bridge to inter switch or change a topic. You have to put a sentence in between the both topics that would act as a bridge for the inter switch. That would give a little hint why you are changing topic and exactly what you are talking about to make it well presentable.

Since he lacked the idea of how to praise politicians in a girl praise filled song, then this song is inappropriate, unfit and not proper.

A song is mostly about what it entails, it is about the message it passes, of which Wizkid failed tremendously here. I think he is better than this.

COMPOSITION

When it turns to singing the African style, Wizkid is a king. He knows just how to compose the song to sound good to be a hit. That’s why even with a bad lyrical arrangement this song is still an African hit.

OVERALL REMARK

This song can be tagged unfit and inappropriate, maybe as one of the best Jargons we have in 2014.

He needs to learn from the lyrics of IcePrince ‘Aboki’ or Timi Dakolo ‘our Nation’ to know how to know how to arrange a political song, that only is his mistake. Great Composition – bad lyrics.
